Thomas Fuller once wrote,

“we never know the worth of water until the well is dry.”

Pollution sometimes is not obvious. We are easy to forget about the significance of protecting environment because everything looks beautiful and clean.

The photograph shows peace and beauty of the ocean; the petri dish (which scientists use it to culture bacteria) shows the chaos and dirty under the ocean.

I collected water samples from Rockaway Beach, Pacifica, CA, where has poor water quality and is not a good place to swim and surf. I am looking for a bacterium, called Enterococci in the water samples because it is an indicator of the presence of fecal material in the ocean. It also indicates the possible presence of disease-causing bacteria. Eating fish or shellfish harvested from water with fecal contamination can also cause human illness. Thus, although the ocean looks like clean, under the peace, there is organism that does not belong to and will cause diseases.
